ST. PAUL – Arc Greater Twin Cities will present its “Changing
Attitudes” Change Maker Award to Sherry Gray of St. Paul at its Annual Meeting
May 6 at General Mills’ Conference Center.
Arc’s Change Maker Awards recognize individuals or organizations for making a
difference for children and adults with intellectual and developmental
disabilities and their families. They reflect Arc’s tag line, “Changing
Attitudes. Changing Policies. Changing Lives.” The “Changing Attitudes”
category recognizes those who positively change public perception of people
with disabilities.
Gray is being honored for inspiring and leading community response objecting to
the offensive title of a local theater production. Finding the title derogatory
to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Gray drew the
media’s attention to the issue and played a key role in mobilizing the
disability community. Her efforts had a powerful effect in changing attitudes
and raising awareness of the impact of language.
Also receiving the “Changing Attitudes” Award are Melissa Lemke of St. Louis
Park and Nora Pliego of Minneapolis.
